The Bucharest Court of Appeal has established that Uber is responsible for paying copyright fees for music broadcast in its vehicles, obliging the company to pay over 7.3 million lei, plus VAT. The decision was made following a lawsuit filed by the Association for the Copyright of Composers (UCMR-ADA), which argued that between September 2015 and November 2018, Uber broadcast music without obtaining a non-exclusive license for the public communication of musical works. The judges considered that broadcasting music in transport vehicles represents a form of public communication, requiring the payment of copyright fees. The decision is not final and can be contested through appeal. Uber has been operating in Romania since 2015, in 36 cities, and globally in over 10,000 cities across more than 70 countries.
