The Romanian leu depreciated again on Monday, ahead of the parliamentary vote on the Mureșan Government, which available information indicates may fail to secure enough votes. At the same time, the European currency approached its historic high recorded last week.
According to the official exchange rate published Monday by the National Bank of Romania, one euro is valued at 5.2786 lei. The level is just 0.0002 lei below the historic record of 5.2788 lei, reached last week.
The leu’s movement comes amid a political context marked by uncertainty surrounding the vote on the new Mureșan Government. The government appears not to have the parliamentary support needed to pass the investiture procedure, while the euro exchange rate’s approach to the record level is again highlighting pressures on the foreign exchange market.
The exchange rate announced by the NBR is the official benchmark for Monday. Any move above 5.2788 lei per euro would mark a new historic record for the European currency against the leu.
