The euro reached a new record on Tuesday in the exchange rate announced by the National Bank of Romania, being quoted at 5.3527 lei. The European currency appreciated by 2.21 bani compared with the previous session, when the NBR exchange rate was 5.3306 lei. The previous record was reached on Friday, October 2 (5.3447 lei/euro).
The development comes amid renewed pressure on the leu, in the context of the nomination of the fourth prime minister. For now, he does not appear to have much chance of securing Parliament’s vote to form a government, with the political situation amplifying uncertainties on the foreign exchange market.
The US dollar also rose. The NBR set an exchange rate of 4.7616 lei per dollar, 0.0047 lei above Monday’s level of 4.7569 lei.
The pound sterling was quoted at 6.3036 lei, up 0.0142 lei from the previous session. Meanwhile, the Swiss franc depreciated slightly, from 5.7358 lei to 5.7285 lei, down 0.0073 lei. Tuesday’s quotation thus marks a new high for the euro against the leu.
