Jean-Philippe Imparato, head of European subsidiary Stellantis, said the group could close factories, including the Atessa plant in Italy, because of the threat of severe fines from the EU for failing to meet CO2 emissions targets. Carmakers need to sell more electric vehicles to avoid the penalties, and Stellantis faces the challenge of doubling EV sales or cutting production of cars with internal combustion engines.
