ONRC: Over 2,000 companies suspended their activity in January 2026, an increase of almost 20% compared to last year.

2,046 companies in Romania suspended their activity in January 2026, which represents an increase of 19.93% compared to the same month in 2025, according to data published by the National Trade Register Office (ONRC).


Bucharest recorded the most suspensions of activity in January 2026, with 255 affected companies, representing an increase of 34.21% compared to the previous month.

The counties of Cluj, Iași, Sibiu, Bihor, Brașov, Argeș, and Timiș also had a significant number of suspended firms, with varying increases.

On the other hand, Giurgiu had the fewest suspensions, with only 6 companies, a drastic decrease of 68.42%.

Other counties with few suspensions include Tulcea, Ialomița, Caraș-Severin, Brăila, and Teleorman. The largest increases in suspensions were recorded in Galați, Botoșani, and Ialomița, while the largest decreases were in Giurgiu, Tulcea, and Vrancea.

By activity sectors, wholesale and retail trade had the most suspensions, followed by other services and professional activities.
