In September 2026, 869 insolvency cases were opened in Romania, according to a RisCo.ro analysis. Bucharest recorded the highest number of cases, 195, accounting for approximately 22% of the national total. The data show significant differences between counties and business sectors.
Compared with September 2025, the number of cases increased in counties such as Cluj, where more than 50 cases were opened, up 20%, and Constanța, which reached 55 cases, an increase of 112%. By contrast, the number of cases fell by 28% in Ilfov and by 15% in Timiș.
Other counties with numerous cases included Bihor, with 39, Iași, with 37, Arad and Prahova, with 19 each, and Hunedoara, with 17. Significant declines were reported in Sibiu, Argeș and Dolj.
The most affected sectors were construction, with 54 cases and an annual increase of 38%; road transport, with a 73% increase; and restaurants, where the increase reached 233%. Long payment terms and fuel costs are among the possible factors.
