In the Romanian education system, a salary paradox was reported by the Minister of Education, Mihai Dimian, who explained that some school directors earn less than teaching staff.

This situation is the result of the different application of salary increases, with directors having salaries regulated by a distinct law compared to that of teachers. Thus, following salary increases for teachers, the salaries of directors were not adjusted accordingly, which generated discontent.

“Regarding the attractiveness of the director position, in conditions where, of course, we are talking about a salary that has been under a different law than the teachers' salary law. And, for this reason, when teachers' salaries increased, the salaries of directors did not increase along with the inclusion of hours. The increase or decrease of norm deductions and certain overtime hours, which could have brought additional income to directors, were included in their regular salary. And then, in fact, it has come to the point where the remuneration for directors is lower than that of some teacher colleagues. And this generates, of course, certain discontent. But, once again, I believe it is an honor, a mission, and a responsibility to lead a community,” said Minister Dimian.

The minister mentioned that authorities are considering legislative measures to correct these inequities, including amendments to the unified salary law.
