The salaries of ministers, lawmakers and other public officials could be increased in 2027, once the new unitary pay law is implemented. Labour Minister Florin Manole announced that negotiations to update the pay scales will resume at the beginning of next year, after data on incomes in public institutions has been compiled.

The minister said that the salaries of public officeholders, including mayors, ministers and state secretaries, have not been updated for approximately eight years. In his view, the new law must reduce disparities within the system and provide increases where incomes have fallen behind.

Previous versions under discussion mentioned increases of up to 2,000–2,500 lei for ministers, deputies and senators. Florin Manole did not confirm that these amounts would appear in the final version of the bill.

However, the minister said that increasing public officials’ incomes is not a priority in the current economic context. He said the Government is more concerned with pensions and the results of measures aimed at reviving the economy. The timetable and amount of any increases are to be established during negotiations in 2027.
