According to the World Economic Outlook report by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Romania's public debt will steadily increase, reaching 70% of GDP by 2030. After a stable period between 51-52% of GDP in 2021-2023, the debt sharply rose to 57.4% in 2024.

The IMF forecasts an upward trajectory for the next five years, with estimates of 61.2% in 2025, 62.5% in 2026, 64.1% in 2027, 66% in 2028, 67.8% in 2029, and 69.1% in 2030. This average increase of about 1.5 percentage points per year suggests a gradual deterioration of the country's budgetary position, which could limit budgetary maneuverability in the event of a crisis.
