The National Bank of Romania (BNR) reported an increase in Romania's total external debt by 3,062 million euros, reaching 231,525 million euros as of March 31, 2026. Long-term debt represents 79% of the total, amounting to 182,847 million euros, an increase of 1.4% compared to the end of 2025.
Short-term debt reached 48,678 million euros, with an increase of 1.1%. During the same period, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of 5,338 million euros, lower than in the same period last year. The goods balance deficit decreased by 977 million euros, while the services balance had a smaller surplus. Direct investments by non-residents in Romania totaled 1,130 million euros, down from the previous year.
