In an interview with Digi24, the Minister of Energy, Bogdan Ivan, stated that Romania will become energy independent by 2028, having the capacity to produce all the necessary energy and export the surplus. Ivan explained that, despite energy resources, Romanians pay high bills due to the loss of 7000 megawatts of electricity production in the last 15 years and a daily deficit of 1200-1500 megawatts, which necessitates imports.
To remedy the situation, measures have been adopted such as changes to ANRE to limit speculation, redirecting funds towards storage capacities, and monitoring large investment projects. The minister emphasized that, alongside energy independence, there is also a goal to reduce prices for final consumers below the European Union average.
