Romania risks penalties of 15 billion euros due to the failure to implement PNRR reforms

Romania is facing the risk of a penalty of over 15 billion euros due to the non-fulfillment of 38 targets and milestones related to the reforms in the PNRR, according to the interim minister of EU funds, Dragoș Pîslaru.

So far, the country has received 10.72 billion euros out of the total allocated, but 45 targets and milestones remain to be implemented, of which 7 are considered fulfilled. Of the 38 in the process of fulfillment, 14 have a significant impact, and 11 require legislative initiatives.

The government has proposed the restructuring of three state companies, with potential penalties of 257 million euros and 71 million euros, respectively. Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu mentioned that, in the event that the restructuring is not finalized, the accelerated sale of shares in Hidroelectrica and Romgaz is being considered.

MIPE constantly monitors progress, but the pace of implementation is slow, generating significant risks for meeting the assumed deadlines.
