The interim Minister of Investments and European Projects, Dragoș Pîslaru, announced that Romania could aim for the year 2032 for entry into the eurozone. The transition to the European currency depends on fiscal-budgetary consolidation, a coherent development plan, and political stability.
Pîslaru emphasized that the following years should be dedicated to improving public finances and meeting the necessary criteria for accession. He mentioned that Romania needs to have a controlled budget deficit and public debt, and by 2030, the aim is to put finances in order.
Currently, Romania is not ready for the adoption of the euro, as it is not participating in the ERM II mechanism, which is considered a mandatory step before accession. According to the European Commission's Convergence Report for 2026, Romania and four other states do not meet all the necessary conditions for adopting the euro.
