Romania has achieved a rapid energy transformation, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 75% since 1990, while the GDP has doubled. The net intensity of emissions has decreased by 88%, which means that the economy generates much less pollution.

Investments in nuclear and renewable energy, along with integration into the European Union, have accelerated this decoupling between growth and emissions. However, the transition has had social costs, with many communities being affected by factory closures and job losses.

Romania continues to invest in natural gas, raising questions about the sustainable future of the economy. Although it has become an example of decoupling economic growth from pollution, challenges persist, and public support for ambitious climate measures is declining.
