Mars, one of the largest peanut buyers in the world, has launched the 'Protect the Peanut' plan aimed at combating losses of up to 30% of the peanut crop due to pests and diseases. The company has already invested 10 million dollars in natural crop improvement and will allocate another 5 million dollars for innovative agricultural research over the next five years. The goal is to develop more resilient peanut varieties capable of withstanding climate challenges and pests. Mars collaborates with research institutions, such as the University of Georgia, to utilize genomic science in the cultivation of these plants. Projects include the development of drought and disease-resistant peanuts, using wild species from Brazil. This initiative is part of Mars's long-term commitment to sustainability.
