Lufthansa has announced that it will eliminate 20,000 short-haul flights from its summer schedule, as a result of rising fuel costs for airplanes, which have doubled.

The reductions are largely due to the closure of the CityLine fleet, which generated losses, and the withdrawal of 27 aircraft. The company mentioned that most airlines are facing increased costs, especially due to the disruption of oil supplies from the Middle East.

Ticket prices have started to rise significantly, and the head of Ryanair warned that fuel supply could be affected starting in May.

Lufthansa stated that the cancellations will save 40,000 tons of fuel by October, representing only 1% of total capacity.

The company will strengthen its European network by eliminating unprofitable routes from Frankfurt and Munich, while expanding routes from Zurich, Brussels, and Vienna.

Passengers will continue to have access to the global network of routes and long-haul connections.
