Romania’s industrial production fell by 3.4% in the first eight months of 2026, as a gross series, according to data published Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS). The development was mainly driven by reduced activity in manufacturing, amid a contraction in industrial production.
Manufacturing recorded a decline of 4.4%, while the production and supply of electricity and heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning increased by 2%. The extractive industry advanced by 0.2%.
As a series adjusted for the number of working days and seasonality, industrial production decreased by 3.7%. The declines were 4.8% in manufacturing and 0.1% in the extractive industry, while the energy sector grew by 1.6%.
In August, compared with the same month of 2025, industrial production fell by 0.4% as a gross series and by 2.7% as an adjusted series. Manufacturing decreased by 1.1%, while the energy sector fell by 0.9%. The extractive industry grew by 8.6%.
Compared with July 2026, industrial production fell by 12.6% as a gross series, following decreases of 15% in manufacturing and 2% in the energy sector. Seasonally adjusted, however, the indicator increased by 1.6% in August.
The data indicate a moderation in the annual decline, following decreases of 6.3% in July and 3.5% in June.
