In an interview, Florin Barbu, the Minister of Agriculture, emphasized the importance of establishing strict conditions for signing the Mercosur agreement. He requested a licensing mechanism for companies that import products from South America, so that these can only be marketed in the country of import, without allowing intra-community trade. Barbu highlighted that the current agreement does not specify the necessary standards for imported products, which could lead to the use of banned substances in the EU.

He also mentioned that the existing testing kits are not adapted for the substances permitted in Mercosur, but banned in the European Union, which could affect food safety. Florin Barbu called for clarifications regarding the use of chemical substances and genetically modified organisms in imported products.
