The former Minister of Agriculture says he would eat meat from a sick sheep without hesitation

Former Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu said he would eat without hesitation meat from a sheep he knew to be sick and unvaccinated. The statement was made in the context of the European Commission banning exports of sheep and goats from Romania until the end of the year.

Asked whether he would consume such meat, Barbu answered affirmatively and argued that it would not pose a risk to human health. According to the former minister, the animals are tested before slaughter, and the checks would eliminate risks to consumers.

Florin Barbu criticized the European Commission’s decision and said that Romania could continue exporting live animals to countries outside the European Union. He argued that interim Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan could make this decision by taking political responsibility, because, in his view, the European measure would not provide for sanctions on exports to third countries.

Barbu asked the prime minister to carefully analyze the decision adopted by the European Commission on June 17 and allow trade to resume. The export ban was introduced amid concerns about the spread of diseases among animals.
