European governments may decide to expedite the search for a successor to Christine Lagarde, the President of the European Central Bank (ECB), due to fears related to a possible victory of the far-right in France in the 2027 elections. Lagarde's term ends in October 2027, and the appointment decision is usually made in the summer of that year. However, the threat posed by Marine Le Pen or Jordan Bardella could prompt European leaders to adjust this timeline. The recent resignation of the head of the Bank of France, Francois Villeroy de Galhau, further complicates the situation, as President Emmanuel Macron will now have the responsibility of selection. Experts emphasize that it is preferable to make decisions before the elections in France, considering that Le Pen and Bardella have different visions regarding the ECB. Additionally, the appointment of the chief economist of the ECB and the head of market operations will attract interest from several countries, and France may want to hold a key position within the ECB. European officials are concerned about the rise of eurosceptic parties, given that they have never been so close to winning in France. Bardella stated that his party will ask the ECB to restart the quantitative easing program to manage France's high debt.
