European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde said Wednesday, in an interview with La Croix, that it would not be a good idea for her to run for the French presidency next year. At 70, Lagarde cited the energy required for such a position and the sacrifices involved, dampening speculation that she could leave the ECB leadership early.
Her eight-year term at the ECB ends in October 2027. Lagarde said that if she were to leave her post earlier, it would only be by a few months, a statement that contradicts reports that she could take over the leadership of the World Economic Forum.
Discussions about the ECB succession have intensified after Isabel Schnabel, Germany’s representative on the Executive Board, announced that she would leave on January 4, 2027, to become financial counsellor and director of the IMF’s Monetary and Capital Markets Department.
Lagarde also warned about France’s financial situation, where public debt is approaching 120% of GDP. She called for a credible plan to reduce debt, labor-market reforms, less bureaucracy, and measures concerning the pension system. By contrast, the official considers the European financial system to be stronger than it was in 2008 or 2011.
