Energy ministers from the European Union will meet next week to discuss domestic natural gas production in response to rising international energy prices caused by the conflict in the Middle East.

The EU relies on natural gas imports for about 80% of its needs, and the recent war has led to significant disruptions.

The preparatory document for the meeting, drafted by Cyprus, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU, emphasizes the importance of utilizing internal resources for price stability, without compromising climate goals. The spokesperson for the Cypriot presidency stated that the aim is to pragmatically analyze the EU's energy security, not to reverse the energy transition.

The EU's domestic gas production has significantly decreased in the last decade, and Romania and Cyprus, with the largest recoverable gas reserves, intend to increase their production.
