The European Union intends to delay, but by no more than one year, the implementation of rules on methane emissions from oil and gas imports, European Energy Commissioner Dan Jorgensen said on Tuesday. The rules are due to take effect on January 1, 2027, and would require suppliers from outside the EU to monitor and report emissions generated during production and transport.

Jorgensen announced in the European Parliament that he had requested an assessment of a delay to the provisions concerning imports. The European Commission has not yet set a date for proposing changes to the legislation, but European officials estimate this could happen next week.

Approximately ten member states, along with the United States, have called for the suspension or revision of Regulation (EU) 2024/1787. Czechia and Italy have requested a three-year grace period, arguing that companies are not prepared to comply with the requirements and that liquefied gas shipments could be redirected to other markets.

The European regulation, the first of its kind worldwide, aims to reduce methane emissions, the second-largest contributor to climate change after carbon dioxide. Any changes will have to be approved by the member states and the European Parliament.
