Eurostat: What decline has construction work recorded in Europe and Romania

In January, construction works decreased by 0.1% in the euro area and by 0.9% in the European Union, according to Eurostat data. Compared to the previous month, when there was a growth of 0.7% in the euro area and 1% in the EU, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Sweden, and Romania had the most significant declines, with Romania reporting a decline of 4.6%. In contrast, Germany recorded a growth of 2.9%, while the Netherlands and Denmark had modest increases.

Compared to the same period in 2025, construction works decreased by 1.9% in the euro area and by 2% in the EU, with Romania experiencing an annual decline of 1.6%. INS data shows a decrease of 2.4% in the volume of construction works in Romania compared to January 2025, and in December 2025, the volume decreased by 6.9%. These trends suggest a stagnation of the construction sector in Europe, with significant economic implications.
