CFR Marfă has officially announced its entry into bankruptcy, according to Deputy Prime Minister Oana Gheorghiu, who described the situation as the "chronicle of a foretold failure."
The Carpatica Feroviar company, which will take over the operations, was established in 2024 and already has over 1,000 employees. Gheorghiu emphasized that the problems of CFR Marfă are not recent, but the result of delays and ineffective solutions over time.
Daniel Apostolache, the director of Carpatica Feroviar, stated that the new company will avoid the mistakes of the past and will adhere to the business plan approved by the European Commission. Carpatica Feroviar currently has 1,070 employees and intends to reach 1,400 by June, with a final target of 2,100 employees. The company will transport various goods, including cereals and petroleum products, having a fleet of 200 locomotives and 6,450 wagons. Apostolache promised that there will be no unnecessary expenses, learning lessons from the past of CFR Marfă, which had debts of over 4.7 billion lei and decreased from 32,000 employees in 1998 to under 4,000 in 2021.
