The National Bank of Romania (BNR) has requested clarifications from the Competition Council regarding the fines imposed on several banks for information exchanges considered anti-competitive in the process of establishing ROBOR.

The spokesperson of BNR, Dan Suciu, emphasized that the lack of detailed explanations can generate confusion and unrealistic expectations, affecting financial stability.

BNR specified that the investigation does not target its activity as the administrator of the trading system, but that clarifications are necessary to avoid controversies.

The Competition Council mentioned that no classic cartel has been found, but the allegations of exchanging confidential information remain unclear.

BNR presented data showing that the fluctuations of ROBOR cannot be attributed solely to the banks, but also to the global economic context. The institution has requested the Council to clarify issues related to the correctness of the regulations and to explain how any anti-competitive behaviors were determined.
