Romania's external debt has increased to 221.283 billion euros, and the current account deficit has reached 22.275 billion euros in the first nine months of 2025.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) reported a significant increase in external debt, which reached 221.283 billion euros on September 30, 2025, compared to 203.510 billion euros at the end of 2024. This represents an increase of approximately 17.8 billion euros in nine months, with an average rate of 45,000 euros per minute. Short-term debt remained stable, around 47 billion euros, while long-term debt increased from 156 billion euros to 174 billion euros. The public administration is the main sector responsible for this debt, increasing from 107 billion euros to 122.4 billion euros. Additionally, the current account of the balance of payments recorded a deficit of 22.275 billion euros, up from 20.515 billion euros in the same period of 2024. However, BNR mentioned some positive news: foreign direct investments increased by 13.8%, reaching 5.647 billion euros in the first nine months of 2025.
