Bithumb issued a public apology after a mistake that occurred on Friday, when it erroneously distributed 2000 bitcoins to each user, instead of cash rewards of 2,000 Korean won. The company managed to recover 99.7% of the 620,000 bitcoins, amounting to approximately 44 billion dollars. Following the incident, Bithumb restricted transactions and withdrawals for 695 affected clients, just 35 minutes after the erroneous distribution. The company emphasized that this incident was not caused by hacking or security issues. The price of bitcoin temporarily dropped by 17% on the platform, but later recovered. Bithumb remains a significant competitor in the South Korean cryptocurrency market, following Upbit.
