The number of personal bankruptcy applications in Romania increased by 117.5% in the first four months of 2026, reaching 124 requests. Mihai Silviu Stejar, director of ANPC, identified the main causes, including reduced incomes and dependence on gambling.

In the first four months of 2026, Romania recorded a significant increase in personal bankruptcy requests, with 124 applications, representing a 117.5% increase compared to the same period in 2025. Mihai Silviu Stejar, the director of the Personal Bankruptcy Directorate within ANPC, stated that the main reasons Romanians are requesting bankruptcy are reduced incomes and gambling addiction. Stejar mentioned unusual cases, such as a woman who requested bankruptcy due to rain, but provided insufficient evidence. He also emphasized that most requests are justified by job losses or medical issues. The number of bankruptcy requests could be three times higher in 2026 compared to 2025, considering current trends. So far, 848 requests have been recorded, with 387 active in various stages of processing.
