The analysis conducted by Cristian Popa, a member of the BNR Board of Directors, shows that Romanians in the diaspora sent back to the country, between 2013 and the first half of 2025, the equivalent of 60 billion pounds, an amount that exceeds twice the initial value of the PNRR. In 2024, transfers reached 6.7 billion pounds, representing almost 2% of Romania's GDP, a significant increase compared to a decade ago. Romanians from the United Kingdom contribute the most, although they are numerically surpassed by communities from Italy and Spain, even though the amounts sent from the UK have increased tenfold since 2014. At the same time, payments from Romania to other countries have increased, leading to a net surplus of 5 billion pounds. Financial transfers have a major impact on families, covering essential expenses and supporting the local economy. However, there are signals that by 2025 financial flows could decrease, against the backdrop of families returning from abroad and losing their connection to Romania.
