A 63-year-old Romanian woman was violently assaulted and robbed on Wednesday evening, June 3, in the center of the Italian city of Lecce, near a popular market. The woman was returning from work to the bus station when she was approached by two young men who tried to snatch her bag.
The victim resisted, which triggered a violent reaction from the attackers, who repeatedly hit her in the face and head, managing to escape with gold jewelry, including a chain, a ring, and a bracelet. The woman's screams attracted the attention of passersby, and a driver honked to alert the authorities.
The police and medical teams arrived quickly at the scene, and the woman was taken to the hospital, where she received care. She was later discharged with a prognosis of seven days. Investigators have launched an investigation to identify the attackers, analyzing witness statements and footage from surveillance cameras. The incident has raised concerns in Lecce, occurring in a central and crowded area.
