A 25-year-old Romanian man, settled in Belgium, was arrested and spent two weeks in prison due to a confusion related to his driving license. Condemned in absentia to a two-year sentence for speeding offenses and driving without a valid license, the young man did not respond to invitations from the Justice, which led to the execution of the sentence. However, in court, his lawyer presented evidence that he holds a valid driving license since February 2020.
The judge decided to convert the two-year sentence into a fine of 800 euros, releasing the young man. His case will be re-evaluated at the Brussels court, and the confusion regarding the status of his license was caused by the lack of registration of the change from the Romanian license to a Belgian one.
