The federal government of Germany decided on Wednesday to limit the increase in fuel prices to once a day, in response to price hikes caused by the Gulf War and conflicts in the Middle East. The Minister of Economy and Energy, Katherina Reiche, emphasized the negative impact on employees and medium-sized enterprises, which are facing high costs.

The new system, known as the "Austrian model", will allow gas stations to lower prices at any time, but to raise them only once a day. Although implementing this model requires legislative changes, the government intends to expedite the process, and the German Competition Authority supports these changes.

Reiche mentioned that fuel prices are rising rapidly with the increase in oil quotas, but are decreasing slowly, and suggested additional measures to prevent price fixing by market operators. Current gasoline and diesel prices in Germany have exceeded 2 euros per liter.
