A 25-year-old man from Sântana, Arad County, has been tested positive for hantavirus after being admitted to the Arad County Emergency Clinical Hospital on May 8, showing flu-like symptoms.
Mayor Daniel Tomuța stated that the man had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital two days prior, and the conditions in which he lived alone were poor, which may have facilitated contact with rodent droppings, the source of possible infection. His family does not show symptoms, and the young man's mother works in Germany. Hospital representatives confirmed that the patient's condition is stable and that he is under observation for a definitive diagnosis.
The National Institute of Public Health has initiated an epidemiological investigation, emphasizing that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission. Biological samples have been sent for confirmation to the Cantacuzino Institute.
