A 43-year-old woman from the village of Scurtești, Vadu Pașii commune, Buzău County, has been placed in preventive custody for 30 days and is being investigated for killing a family member. According to prosecutors, she allegedly killed her son just seven days after his birth, in June 2021, and then asked her husband to help conceal the child’s body.
The woman gave birth to a healthy baby boy at Buzău Maternity Hospital on June 18, 2021. Investigators claim that on June 25, after returning home, she was left alone with the newborn in the bedroom and allegedly suffocated him. The child was allegedly wrapped in a blanket, placed in a plastic bag and handed to the husband, who allegedly buried him on the gravel bank of the Buzău River, near their home.
The case was opened after a social worker from the maternity hospital notified the authorities that the child’s birth had not been followed by his registration with Buzău City Hall. Following their checks, investigators reached the mother, who, according to the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Buzău Tribunal, allegedly confessed and provided details about what had happened.
The Buzău Tribunal granted the prosecutor’s request and ordered the woman’s preventive detention for 30 days. Investigations are continuing to establish all the circumstances and the liability of the persons involved.
