As the rapporteur for the implementation of the European Cancer Combat Plan, Romanian MEP Vlad Voiculescu is fighting to transform cross-border treatment from a "bureaucratic maze" into a simple and guaranteed right. MEP Vlad Voiculescu calls for equity in cancer survival rates across the EU. Vlad Voiculescu on the new European legislation regarding medicines. Brussels, February 9, 2026 – Romanian MEP Vlad Voiculescu has made a strong call for equity in the European medical landscape, warning that a patient's chances of survival should not depend on postal codes, wealth, or connections. As the European Parliament's rapporteur for the implementation report of the Europe Against Cancer Plan, Voiculescu is calling for a systemic reform to reduce the growing gap between Eastern and Western Europe regarding oncological care.

In short Vlad Voiculescu calls for a fairer distribution of the EU's 4 billion euro funds to reduce survival disparities among member states. The MEP advocates for a simplified cross-border treatment system, ensuring clear rules and predictable reimbursement for patients receiving treatment in other EU countries.

Voiculescu emphasized that, while the EU invests 4 billion euros in prevention, screening, and clinical studies, Romanian patients still face major barriers, including long waiting lists and late diagnoses. He argued that the fight against cancer is a "test of state functionality," which Romania is struggling to pass. To address this, the MEP is working closely with the European Commission on a system with short deadlines and real support for those needing specialized treatment in other member states.

"It is unacceptable for chances of survival to depend on luck," Voiculescu stated. His mandate focuses on ensuring that the benefits of European funds — modern hospitals, trained medical staff, and cutting-edge medicines — reach all Europeans equally. By simplifying the rules for cross-border healthcare, the goal is to transform a complex administrative process into a real safety net for every citizen.
