The Vard shipyard in Tulcea has achieved a remarkable performance through the construction of the 'Discovery' vessel, a hybrid ship designed for the installation of submarine cables, commissioned by Toyo Construction from Japan.

Recently launched, the ship is over 150 meters long and weighs nearly 19,000 tons, being equipped with a state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion system. This vessel will play a crucial role in Japan's renewable energy expansion program, having the capability to operate in varied conditions, from shallow waters to regions with extreme depths.

'Discovery' can support a total load of 9,000 tons and is equipped with powerful cranes, a helipad, and remotely operated submersibles. Its hybrid propulsion allows for efficient use of electric energy, powered by a 2 megawatt-hour battery pack. This achievement strengthens the position of Fincantieri, the owner of Vard, which is expanding its influence in the underwater technologies sector through strategic investments.
