USR Senator, Ruxandra Cibu Deaconu, secretary of the Senate Health Committee, has initiated a legislative proposal to recognize midwives as healthcare service providers, allowing direct contracting with CNAS. This initiative was discussed during a debate organized with the Midwives Association of Romania, focusing on the recognition and regulation of the autonomous role of midwives.
Although their role is legally recognized, access to preventive services and counseling remains limited, especially for women in vulnerable communities. Irina Mateescu, president of the Midwives Association, emphasized that without a clear legislative framework, the profession remains underutilized, in a context where Romania needs more prevention in maternal health. The debate is part of the USR project 'March 8 all year / Health', dedicated to women's rights and health. Representatives of authorities, the medical system, and civil society participated in the event.
