The National Union of Judges in Romania (UNJR) has requested President Nicușor Dan to resend to Parliament the Law regarding the amendment of the service pensions of magistrates for re-examination. Judges believe that this measure is essential for ensuring an independent judiciary. UNJR harshly criticizes the statements of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, accusing him of a Stalinist mentality that subordinates justice to the executive power. Judges argue that the law is not a reform, but a punishment intended to influence judicial decisions in favor of the government.
Additionally, UNJR draws attention to the campaigns of defamation against magistrates and emphasizes that judges must apply the law in defense of citizens' rights, even against the interests of the state. The association calls for a real debate and consultation of the judicial system, in accordance with the recommendations of the Venice Commission, to correct the deficiencies of the law. UNJR announces that it will use all legal means to defend the independence of the judiciary, warning that political subordination of the judiciary could lead to historical deviations.
