A 29-year-old Ukrainian citizen was arrested preventively after border police from the Giurgiu Territorial Inspectorate discovered, during a Blitz-type operation on DN5, 4,080,000 cigarettes hidden in the truck he was driving.
The operation took place based on a risk analysis, and the vehicle, registered in Ukraine, was selected for inspection. The police found 204,000 packs of untaxed cigarettes in the semi-trailer, valued at approximately 6,120,000 lei, for which the driver could not present any documents of origin.
The authorities have drawn up a criminal case for the possession and sale of excise goods without the proper marking. The entire quantity of cigarettes was confiscated, and the driver was initially detained for 24 hours, with the Giurgiu Court expected to order preventive arrest for 30 days.
