The leader of UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, proposed a reduction of the VAT rate as a measure to combat inflation, an idea supported by President Nicușor Dan, but with certain conditions. Dan explained that a decrease in VAT could only be possible after the Government proposes the budget for 2027, emphasizing that the budget for 2026 is already approved and will not be modified. He called on the parties to come up with the proposal for the budget for 2027, which will be discussed during the consultations at Cotroceni.
Dan also mentioned that, in the past, he accepted the increase of VAT as part of the agreement for forming the government. Despite recent criticisms, he acknowledged Ilie Bolojan's contribution to correcting the budget deficit, but avoided commenting on the details of the adopted fiscal measures. Dan reaffirmed that Romania has good economic prospects, despite recent fiscal challenges.
