A 38-year-old Turkish citizen was detained near the Calafat Border Crossing Point after police discovered 131 lethal pistols and significant quantities of contraband tobacco in his truck. He was stopped for inspection on the E79 road, and during a thorough inspection of the trailer, which was sealed by Turkish customs authorities, boxes of cigarettes and bags of shredded tobacco were found hidden among the aluminum profiles he claimed to be transporting.
The 9 mm caliber pistols were individually packaged and included both marked and unmarked models. Also confiscated were 39,800 Parliament brand cigarettes and 130,000 Marlboro brand cigarettes, all with Turkish tax stamps, as well as 610 kg of shredded tobacco. The driver stated that he was unaware of the illegal goods, and following the checks, a criminal case was opened for smuggling and violation of arms regulations. The pistols and other goods were seized for further investigation.
