Traian Băsescu stated, during an appearance on B1 TV, that the meeting between U.S. Ambassador Kimberly Guilfoyle and opposition leaders in Bucharest was not accidental, but may have been part of an effort to promote imports of American liquefied gas.
The former president said that political pressure may have emerged after Romgaz rejected a contract considered too costly. According to Băsescu, the analysis carried out by the company in December indicated significant losses in the event of importing 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas from the United States, amid price differences and declining European demand.
“What do I want to clarify? This ambassador is not some little chick who has just arrived; she is a woman who is a prosecutor by profession, has decades of service in the prosecution system, and has also worked in state institutions, so she is not naive. This lady has an objective: to import 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas from the United States, and she applies pressure by taking advantage of the position she holds. And sometimes she does so, as I saw in the Wall Street Journal, quite vigorously. We’ve had this before… You know? They are people from the same party. We also wanted to cozy up to Bush, and for the elections we gave him the Bechtel contract as a gift. And we didn’t win the elections, so what did we do? Right? We keep giving these kinds of gifts. We gave Blair the Galați Steelworks. We give everyone something so that things will be fine,” the former president explained on B1TV.
