New amendments to Bulgaria's road traffic law reduce fines for cars up to 3.5 tons driving without a vignette to 194 leva (about €97), and if the fine is paid immediately, it drops to 97 leva (€48). For trucks, fines range from 78 to 1,800 leva (€39-900), depending on the circumstances. The changes are the result of a decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union, which has called for Bulgarian penalties to be brought in line with EU rules. By comparison, Romania has different fines and vignette fees.
