The first total lunar eclipse of the year takes place today, March 3, 2026, an event in which the Moon takes on a reddish hue, being dubbed the "Blood Moon." The phenomenon is visible to approximately 2.5 billion people, with the best viewing conditions in North America, Australia, and the Pacific, while the exact times vary depending on location.

Also today, the selenelion can be observed, a rare phenomenon in which the eclipsed Moon and the Sun are visible simultaneously in the sky due to atmospheric refraction, visible early in the morning on the east coast of the USA. The eclipse goes through five stages and, unlike a solar eclipse, can be safely viewed without eye protection. Details regarding visibility times for various time zones are already available.
