The synagogue in Alba Iulia was recently vandalized, with several crosses and a symbol that appears to be a letter from the Greek alphabet spray-painted on the facade of the building. The police have launched an investigation to identify the perpetrator, considering that there are several surveillance cameras located in the area of the place of worship, which is situated in a central location.

The synagogue, known as 'Mareh Yezekiel', is the first brick synagogue built in Transylvania, with a history that dates back to 1827. It was restored and reopened in 2017, with funding from the Government of Romania and the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania.

Over time, the synagogue has been the target of acts of violence, including a bombing in 1938, but no casualties were reported. The Jewish community in Alba Iulia, once the largest in Transylvania, is now among the smallest in Romania.
