The Ambassador of Romania to Chişinău, Cristian-Leon Ţurcanu, announced the resumption, after 17 years, of rail traffic on the Fălciu-Cantemir section, which will open new opportunities for freight transport and will support the economic development of southern Moldova.
The test circulation ceremony took place on Wednesday, and the ambassador emphasized the importance of this connection for diversifying import/export routes. The last passenger train ran on this section in 2009, and the resumption of circulation confirms the functionality of the modernized line, which allows direct connection to the railway network in Romania. The Fălciu-Cantemir line, built between 1917-1918, was used for decades for freight transport but suffered degradation after 1990. Adapting to European standard and broad gauges facilitates Moldova's integration into the European railway network.
