INS: Slight decrease in the number of pensioners and the average pension in the first quarter of 2026

According to INS, in the first quarter of 2026, the average number of pensioners was 4,920 thousand, decreasing by 7 thousand compared to the fourth quarter of 2025, while the average monthly pension was 2,934 lei, decreasing by 0.8%. The number of state social insurance pensioners was 4,577 thousand, with a difference of under a thousand people compared to the previous quarter. Compared to the first quarter of 2025, the number of pensioners increased by 20 thousand, and average pensions increased by 0.6% for total pensions and by 0.4% for social insurance pensions.

The share of state social insurance pensioners is 93%, the majority being retirement pensioners. The ratio of pensioners to employees varies significantly across the territory, from 4 to 10 in Bucharest to 15 to 10 in Teleorman. The average gross pension of state social insurance was 2,820 lei, while the average nominal net pension was 2,699 lei. Discrepancies between women's and men's pensions persist, and the number of beneficiaries of social allowances reached 886.9 thousand people.
