On September 22, 2026, the Bucharest Tribunal ruled that the National Uranium Company (CNU), a company wholly owned by the Romanian state and insolvent since December 2021, would enter bankruptcy under the general procedure and be dissolved. The ruling is enforceable but may be appealed within seven days of its publication in the Insolvency Proceedings Bulletin.
The court ordered the company’s assets to be sealed, revoked its right to administer its affairs, and transferred management to the judicial liquidator. The consortium formed by Expert Insolvență SPRL Bucharest Branch and Aktiv-Lex Insolvență SPRL was appointed. Creditors may register their claims for admission until November 3, 2026, while the hearing for continuation of the proceedings was set for January 26, 2027.
CNU entered insolvency at the request of Tinmar Energy. In 2025, the reorganization plan proposed by the special administrator was rejected by creditors, while subsequent challenges filed by the trade union were dismissed by the court. The company reduced its operations, focusing on environmental and nuclear safety obligations.
A plan to lay off 109 employees in three stages was approved for the 2026–2027 period. Currently, approximately 30 people still work at CNU. The government allocated 3.23 million lei to support the laid-off employees. The turnover reported for 2025 was 897,290 lei, more than 33 times lower than in 2018.
