Diana Buzoianu, the interim Minister of the Environment, stated that local authorities in Olt County have ignored illegal extraction activities of aggregates for years, which are visible from satellites. Following recent checks, two companies have been sanctioned and prohibited from carrying out extraction activities. The ministry is preparing criminal complaints against them and the institutions that did not intervene.

Buzoianu emphasized that illegal exploitations have been identified on 75 hectares at Mineralport and on 27 hectares at Pond Star, without permits or environmental approvals. The minister highlighted local complicities, mentioning the connections of the director of the Jiu Water Management Directorate with a profitable construction company. The ministry intends to propose legislative changes to increase penalties and allow the confiscation of equipment used in illegal exploitations.
